"Nature Through Lens 3" a photography exhibition was inaugurated by his Excellency Mr. James F. Moriarty, Ambassador, Embassy of United States of America on 15th June, 2007. In the four day exhibition (15th to 18th, June 2007), 300 pictures of more than 100 participants of the 3rd Nature and Wildlife Photography Competition for Amateurs 2007, were on display. Judges for this competition were Mani Lama, Nripa Dhoj Khadka, Pradeep Shakya and Raj Bhai Suwal. Winners of this competition were Mr. Vibek Raj Mauriya (Grand prize winner), Mr Binod Rai (Landscape category winner), Mr Yatra Thulung(Fauna category winner), Mr. Sanjay Lama (Macro category winner) and Mr. Ragendra Dev Adhikari (Flora category winner), The rest of the TOP TEN photographers included; Yatra Thulung, Rabi Karmacharya, Ujwal Bhattarai, Janak Khattiwada and Silvia Del Conte. This exhibition not only promotes amateur photographers and nature photography in Nepal but also raises funds for conservation at local level in the Kathmandu Valley and supports young researchers to carry out studies on Urban Wildlife. In addition, WCN Photography Program brings people together from all walks of the life towards a common cause of nature and wildlife conservation through the medium of photography. WCN has been organizing photography competition on Nature and Wildlife which has been very popular amongst the youth. Through this national level competition WCN/YEP is trying to provide a platform for nature photographers to do justice to our natural heritage by capturing pictures through their lenses so that its beauty can reach out to people and bring them together to protect and conserve biodiversity. We believe photography can be a powerful advocacy tool for nature conservation. Short introduction of the judges:
Mani Lama, a renowned photographer of the country, Agricultural Engineer by education (Graduated from Fresco State University, Colorado) says he chose photography as a profession quite unexpectedly. His hobby of taking pictures turned him into a professional photographer. According to him photography classes for two semesters during his study in U.S molded his career. He has been regularly photographing for UNICEF, ACTIONAID, UNDP, FAO, Save the Children (UK), WHO and GTZ on contracts. He has been known as a person who started the postcard era in Nepal.
Nripa Dhoj Khadka is a senior instructor of Electronics and Computer Engineering at IOE for the last 25 years on every weekday and a passionate nature photographer on weekdays and free days which has been over 30 years. He was known for sharing knowledge about photography with anyone who has yearn to learn. A conservationist by nature, he advocates conservation through his pictures.
Pradip Shakya, a soft spoken person, is not a new name in the field of photography. He has been in the photography profession since last two decade. With the expertise in Photography, he is known as a man responsible for making Lalitpur Durbar Square famous in the international arena.
Raj Bhai Suwal is a workaholic who has done all types of photography; photojournalism, landscape, wildlife, architecture and portraits. He is the most successful photographer of the country and is the man behind the pictures on most of the billboards, magazines and newspaper we see everyday. For Raj Bhai Suwal, a perfectionist, photography is passion and he takes each day as a lesson to master his art.
