Mobile nature school

On June 4, 2009 WCN launched its mobile nature school with an aim to offer “On the Spot Awareness raising Trainings” on environmental issues, in line with the existing curriculum, but using alternate integrative methods of teaching. It will meet the pupils where they are and offer the schools and organizations working with children and youngsters a chance to focus a part of their teaching / activities on the environment which especially poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged groups are so dependent on. This year WCN has conducted several workshops with environment science teachers to come up with innovative relevant ideas to update the existing curriculum of Environmental Science. The mobile nature school was unveiled by WCN Goodwill Ambassadors Mr. Suraj Singh Thakuri and Ms. Bhumika Thapa Shah in an occasion organized on the eve of World Environment Day. The mobile nature school has been supported by DANIDA Denmark.

Picassos of the Jungle

Sanjeevani Y. Shrestha, Program Manager of WCN inaugurated an art exhibition “Picasso of the Jungle” on 13 February 2009 at the Indigo Gallery, Kathmandu. The special feature of this exhibition was that all artwork were painted by two elephants Sundarkali and Khem Prasad. Sundarkali is a 35 year old female elephant while Khem Prasad is a 5 year old male elephant of Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge and Machan Wildlife Resort.

Elephants for hundreds of years have been used of logging, carrying loads and people, for entertainment, cultural rituals and in ancient and medieval times during battles. No matter what, these pachyderms have always shown sharp intelligence despite their immense body and physical power. It comes as no surprise to see the affinity of elephants towards art when given a chance like this by Ariane Le Clerq. Ariane is a young American girl who grew up in Nepal with love for the country’s elephants and wildlife animals. Ariane wants to support WCN’s Elephant Conservation Scholarship Fund with the proceeds from the sales of the exhibition for the students who are victims of Human Elephant Conflict in Nepal.
